He has a serious problem with hygiene, but more importantly a gambling addiction, so his line of thinking is that if he becomes the house itself, there is no addiction. Although everything that goes on here is against the law and morally gray in some area, it’s a definite positive that the leads are likable with reasons to cheer on their shady operation. When Scott and Kate Johansen’s daughter gets into the college of her dreams it’s cause for celebration. That is, until Scott and Kate learn that the scholarship they were counting on didn’t come through, and they’re now on the hook for tuition they can’t begin to afford. The House is a 2017 American comedy film directed by Andrew J. Cohen, and co-written by Cohen and Brendan O'Brien.

The House is a solid, if unremarkable, big studio comedy with fleeting moments of humor peppered throughout its runtime. All these performers are given decent setups, but the script loses interest in anything that starts to look like a comedic through line. “The House” is the rare raunchy comedy that actually could have stood to be a little longer—and not just by padding the running time with outtakes. Cohen cuts so briskly from each scenario to the next that they never register. And the most significant shift of all—the one that occurs within Scott and Kate—is the most extreme and the least plausible. Out of nowhere, she’s smoking pot non-stop and he’s reinvented himself as an enforcer known as “The Butcher.” They start wearing flashy, gangster-style clothing.
Back home, Frank convinces the Johansens to start an underground casino at his house to raise money for Alex's tuition and to help him get his wife back. The casino operation proves to be running smoothly as they gain more customers. In another community town-hall meeting, Bob becomes suspicious at the low attendance and suspends the meeting to launch an investigation. Back at the Johansens' casino, Frank discovers that one of the gamblers, Carl, is counting cards. The Johansens and Frank confront him, but he brags that he works for mob boss Tommy Papouli.
Mariah Carey was supposed to have a cameo in the film, but had what co-star Rob Huebel called "multiple unrealistic demands". The key ingredient to its passing grade is without a doubt the sheer madness that goes on in the illegal underground casino that Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, and Jason Mantzoukas all collaborate on starting up in Jason’s basement. Also, this is one of those movies where there’s no point writing about characters by any name other than the actor that portrays them, so keep that in mind.
Each of these actors brings their own unique brand of humor to the movie, helping to make it an entertaining and engaging experience from start to finish. Throughout the movie, Ferrell and Poehler's comedic chemistry shines, as they deliver laugh after laugh with their signature brand of humor. Simpkins also impresses as their daughter Alex, who is both funny and relatable as she navigates her way through the chaos that her parents have created.

They reluctantly agree to accompany their friend and neighbor, Frank Theodorakis, whose wife Raina is divorcing him over his gambling and porn addiction, to a previously-planned trip to Las Vegas. After numerous wins playing craps, they lose their winnings after Scott jinxes the table by telling Frank not to roll a seven.
